R & J Part 1

We are going through Romeo and Juliet in English class and we have to answer these questions...
  1. What is the point of view in this story? First Person


  1. What is the effect of that choice? We hear everything from the characters themselves.


  1. List a few key details from Part 1. 1. The Montague's and Capulet's are 2 different households that fight, but they have been ordered to get along. 2. Romeo is a lover 3. Paris wants to marry Juliet 4. Romeo meets Juliet and it is love at first sight. 5. Juliet is a Capulet and Romeo is a Montague.


  1. What is the setting? Verona, Italy


  1. Why is the setting appropriate? What do you know about the setting and how have you seen that affect the story so far? They are inside the city walls so they run into each other frequently.


  1. Identify a sentence or passage that is important to revealing setting. The fight in the streets because it shows how they run into each other and fight because of one little insult.


  1. What did you learn in part one about the main character(s)? That they are hopelessly in love and they just barely met. They also just figure out that Juliet is a Capulet and Romeo is a Montague.


  1. What do these characters want for themselves  or for others? Romeo and Juliet just want each other. Benvolio wants to help Romeo find true love. Mercutio and Tybalt are fighters who want to help their side.


  1. Do they cause the trouble for themselves or others? They cause trouble to others. Because Juliet's mother wants her to marry Paris but Juliet just wants Romeo.


  1. What conclusions can you draw about the characters? They are both willing to do anything for the other and don't want to live without the other one.


  1. Do you trust the main character(s)? Why or why not? Yes. I trust Juliet and Romeo. They seem to have good intentions and they don't tell anyone about the other.


  1. Would you want to have any of them as a friend? Why or why not? Yes. I think it would be fun to be a friend of Juliet. She seems to have a certain take on life that would make her fun to be around.
